The best way to get an accurate read on this is just simulating a hopeless situation like in the article.
Are they coachable?
My favorite strategy is just coaching them on role plays in the interview and getting an idea of what coaching them will feel like. Besides that, question that pry at their intellectual honesty and openness correlate well with coaching.
